AI-defined vehicle (AIDV) is an emerging industry term for vehicles in which AI models and agents increasingly shape functions, personalization, assistance and interactions on top of software-defined vehicle architecture.
AIDV vs SDV
An SDV emphasizes software-controlled functions, updatable architecture and centralized compute. An AIDV adds a stronger focus on AI inference, models, agents and data-driven adaptation. Qualcomm describes this transition as moving from functions that are simply programmed toward functions increasingly shaped by AI models and agentic systems.
What does agentic AI mean in a car?
Agentic systems are designed to pursue goals and coordinate multiple capabilities rather than only answer a single prompt. In a vehicle that could include orchestrating cockpit settings, route context, vehicle health information or assistance features. Safety-critical control still requires appropriate automotive safety engineering and guardrails.
Why centralized compute matters
AI workloads require CPUs, GPUs, NPUs, memory bandwidth and software tooling. This makes the underlying SDV compute architecture important: the vehicle needs enough common compute capacity to run and update models across cockpit, ADAS and connectivity domains.
Is AIDV a formal standard?
No. AIDV is currently an emerging industry term, not a formal SAE automation category or an ISO-defined vehicle class. CarGlossary therefore treats it as terminology to watch rather than a standardized certification.
