What Is C-V2X?

C-V2X means Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything. It is a standards-based way for vehicles to communicate directly with nearby road users and infrastructure, and through mobile networks with cloud or backend services.

Simple definition

C-V2X (Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything) is the 3GPP family of cellular-based technologies used for V2X communication, including direct PC5 links and network-based Uu links.

How C-V2X works

C-V2X is not simply “a car connected to 5G.” It includes two complementary paths. PC5 supports direct communication between nearby devices, while Uu uses the cellular network. A safety application can therefore use local direct messages, network information, or both.

5GAA’s 2026 work on dynamic V2X specifically studies PC5 and Uu working together in non-line-of-sight and other complex road situations.

LTE-V2X vs 5G / NR-V2X

3GPP standardized early cellular V2X capabilities in the LTE era and later added New Radio V2X capabilities for more demanding use cases. This is why the terms LTE-V2X, 5G-V2X and NR-V2X can all appear in connected-vehicle discussions.

NR-V2X should not be treated as a simple marketing synonym for all C-V2X. C-V2X is the broader family.

Why C-V2X matters

C-V2X can extend a vehicle’s awareness beyond what its onboard sensors can see. Potential applications include intersection warnings, traffic-signal information, road-hazard messages, vulnerable-road-user awareness and cooperative driving. Its usefulness depends on deployment coverage, interoperability, security and trustworthy data.
