V2P (Vehicle-to-Pedestrian) is a V2X category for communication involving vehicles and vulnerable road users such as pedestrians or cyclists through compatible devices or infrastructure.
Who does V2P include?
The name says pedestrian, but V2P discussions often sit within the wider vulnerable-road-user context, which can include pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. Implementations may involve phones, dedicated devices, network services or roadside infrastructure.
Why V2P matters
Cameras and radar can struggle with occlusion. Communication can potentially warn a vehicle about a road user who is around a corner, behind a larger vehicle or otherwise hard to detect early.
Why V2P is difficult
Practical V2P systems must solve device participation, positioning accuracy, battery use, privacy, false alerts, security and interoperability. A phone simply having 5G does not automatically make it a V2P safety device.
