V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) is V2X communication in which vehicles exchange information with other vehicles to support awareness, warnings and cooperative applications.
What can vehicles exchange?
Depending on the system and application, V2V messages can describe position, speed, heading, vehicle dynamics or safety events. The goal is not to stream everything a car knows, but to share useful, timely information for a defined application.
Potential V2V uses
Examples include forward-collision warnings, intersection awareness, emergency-braking alerts and cooperative maneuvering. V2V can be particularly valuable when another vehicle is hidden by traffic, buildings or road geometry.
V2V is not autonomous driving
V2V provides communication. It does not decide the SAE automation level of a vehicle. A human-driven vehicle can use V2V, while an automated vehicle may use V2V as one input among sensors, maps and software.
