Toyota Land Cruiser FJ vs Prado 250: size, engine, 4WD and price

The FJ makes Land Cruiser ownership more compact. The Prado 250 brings more power, more seating and a different four-wheel-drive setup. Here is what the official specifications actually say.

In brief: The FJ is 380 mm shorter than the Saudi Prado TX-2 petrol specification, uses a naturally aspirated 2.7L engine and part-time 4WD, and offers five seats in Toyota's global production description. The Prado TX-2 petrol uses a 2.4L turbo engine, full-time 4WD and seven seats. These are different vehicle segments and trim references, not equivalent equipment packages.

Toyota FJ vs Prado 250 specification comparison

This table uses Toyota Saudi Arabia's published FJ VX listing and its 2026 Prado TX-2 2.4L petrol specification. The FJ's five-seat figure is confirmed by Toyota Global for the model; individual Saudi-market equipment should be checked at ordering.

Do not mix market data without a label: Japan-market FJ dimensions are 4,575 × 1,855 × 1,960 mm, whereas Toyota Saudi lists 4,610 × 1,855 × 1,890 mm. This article compares Saudi-listed exterior dimensions; Japanese manufacturer material is cited separately for chassis and suspension engineering.

Engine: does the smaller FJ have enough power?

The key difference is turbocharging, not merely engine displacement. The FJ's 2.7L petrol engine produces 164 hp and 245 Nm in Saudi-market specifications, while the Prado TX-2's smaller-displacement 2.4L turbo produces 267 hp and 430 Nm. That is an official-spec advantage of 103 hp and 185 Nm for the Prado. Engine figures alone cannot establish real-world acceleration or fuel economy in the same test conditions.

Toyota Saudi also offers 2.8L turbo-diesel Prado trims rated at 201 hp and 500 Nm. They should not be confused with the 2.4L petrol TX-2 compared in the main table. For fuel economy, Toyota lists 10.6 km/L for the Saudi Prado petrol; it does not provide an equivalent Saudi FJ fuel-consumption figure on the cited interest-registration page. Japan's FJ WLTC rating should not be treated as a direct Saudi-cycle comparison.

Dimensions and practicality: why the 380 mm length gap matters

At 4,610 mm, the Saudi-listed FJ is 380 mm shorter, 85 mm narrower and 94 mm lower than the cited Prado TX-2. Its wheelbase is 270 mm shorter. A shorter footprint may make parking, tight turns and narrow trails easier, but turning-circle and real-world clearance comparisons require like-for-like market data.

The FJ is a two-row, five-seat SUV according to Toyota Global. The Prado Saudi TX-2 is a seven-seat vehicle. For buyers regularly carrying six or seven people, that is a more decisive difference than exterior styling.

Off-road: part-time vs full-time 4WD, suspension and articulation

The FJ's part-time 4WD and the Prado's full-time 4WD are not interchangeable operating systems. Follow Toyota's instructions for when to select four-wheel drive and low range; part-time high-range 4WD should not automatically be used on high-traction roads. The Prado TX-2 specification lists a high/low transfer case plus central and rear differential locks, while the FJ's market-specific rear-lock availability should be confirmed against the final Saudi equipment sheet.

Toyota's Japanese technical release states that the FJ uses a high-mount double-wishbone front suspension and a four-link rigid rear axle with lateral rod. Toyota describes the Land Cruiser 250 as using high-mount double-wishbone front and trailing-link rear axle suspension. Both are off-road-oriented axle layouts, but construction labels alone do not prove that one has better ride quality or articulation in every scenario. See our suspension engineering guide and suspension comparison tool.

Toyota Global says the Japanese FJ achieves wheel articulation comparable to the Land Cruiser 70 and benefits from the shorter wheelbase. This is a manufacturer engineering claim, not a head-to-head CarGlossary field test against the Saudi Prado.

Saudi availability and price: do not confuse published specs with sales

As checked on 14 October 2026, Toyota Saudi Arabia has a dedicated FJ interest-registration page with VX specifications, but does not display a confirmed Saudi retail price or firm local customer-delivery date on that page. Toyota officially began FJ sales in Japan on 14 May 2026; that does not establish Saudi showroom availability.

The 2026 Prado is listed in Saudi Arabia with prices by trim. Toyota's displayed TX-2 petrol price is SAR 199,582.50 at this review, subject to dealer quotation and price changes. Since the FJ's Saudi price is not confirmed, we cannot responsibly declare a price winner or compute the price difference.

Which should you shortlist?

  • Consider the FJ if you want a smaller Land Cruiser-family vehicle, a five-seat layout and part-time 4WD, and you can wait for confirmed local pricing and availability.
  • Consider the Prado 250 petrol if seven seats, substantially higher torque, full-time 4WD and immediate access to a published Saudi trim/price list matter more.
  • Consider a Prado diesel separately if its 500 Nm rating, specific trim equipment and your driving pattern suit your needs; its figures should not be mistaken for the petrol TX-2's.

Our comparison is specification-led, not a road test. Neither vehicle is universally superior: your route, passenger needs, local stock and final trim equipment change the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Is the new Land Cruiser FJ the same as the Prado?

No. They belong to the Land Cruiser family but use different packaging, wheelbases, powertrains and four-wheel-drive configurations.

Is the FJ more powerful than the Prado?

No. Official Saudi specifications put FJ VX at 164 hp and Prado TX-2 petrol at 267 hp. Other Prado trims differ in engine type and output.

Is the Land Cruiser FJ available in Saudi Arabia now?

As of 14 October 2026, Toyota Saudi has published specifications and an interest-registration page, but that page does not by itself confirm an on-sale date, delivered units or a Saudi retail price.

Is the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ a 2026 or 2027 model?

Japan launched the FJ in May 2026. The Saudi product page does not identify a specific model year in its main specification listing. We therefore avoid treating “2027” as a confirmed Saudi official model-year designation.
