What Is a Skid Plate? Underbody Protection Explained

A skid plate is a rigid protective panel mounted underneath a vehicle to shield vulnerable mechanical components from rocks, impacts, scraping and trail obstacles. Serious off-road vehicles may use several plates to protect different areas.

Simple definition

A skid plate is an underbody guard designed to take impacts or scraping before vulnerable vehicle components do.

What can skid plates protect?

Depending on the vehicle, separate plates may protect the engine oil pan, transmission, transfer case, fuel tank, exhaust components, differentials or other low-mounted hardware.

Steel vs aluminium vs composite

Steel is strong and abrasion-resistant but heavy. Aluminium saves weight and resists corrosion but generally needs more thickness for similar stiffness. Some manufacturers use engineered composites where impact, noise, weight or aerodynamics matter.

Factory skid plates vs aftermarket armor

Factory plates are designed around the vehicle's cooling, mounting points and service access. Aftermarket armor can provide greater coverage or thickness, but additional weight, reduced airflow or poor mounting can create trade-offs.

What our SFC 2026 photos show

The exhibition display from The Solid Shield shows both an installed underbody system and individual formed panels. The images are useful because they make it easy to see that underbody protection is usually a system of multiple shaped guards rather than one flat sheet.

Vehicle example: INEOS Grenadier

INEOS lists front and rear skid plates as standard on the Grenadier and Quartermaster, reinforcing the role of underbody protection in a purpose-built off-road vehicle.
