Pony.ai and inDrive Astana Robotaxi: Kazakhstan Launch and Testing Status

Pony.ai, inDrive and NVIDIA signed an agreement to explore autonomous ride-hailing in Kazakhstan. The first proposed market is Astana, but an agreement to explore a service is not a live Level 4 robotaxi operation.

Status: PARTNERSHIP MOU / PROPOSED FUTURE DEPLOYMENT.

As of 23 October 2026, Pony.ai, inDrive and NVIDIA have announced a memorandum of understanding. No Astana public ride launch date, live passenger service, fare, approved route or confirmed driverless test start has been announced.

Is Pony.ai's Astana robotaxi available to book?

No public booking launch has been confirmed. The companies announced a plan to assess technical, regulatory, operational and commercial feasibility for offering rides through the inDrive app. The partners have not confirmed an exact launch date, app booking activation or service boundaries in Astana.

What was announced on 23 October 2026?

Pony.ai and inDrive signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with NVIDIA to explore autonomous mobility in Kazakhstan. The initial target is Astana, the country's capital. The proposed launch depends on agreement with Kazakhstan's government. The companies also plan to assess potential expansion to other Kazakh cities and markets where inDrive operates; those are not approved launches.

What vehicles and technology would the service use?

The announcement names Pony.ai Gen-7 robotaxis, the inDrive ride-hailing app and NVIDIA infrastructure. NVIDIA Hyperion is a reference sensor and compute architecture intended for Level 4 automated driving; the announcement also refers to Alpamayo Stack and Halos safety technologies. These technologies do not themselves establish that a commercial service is operational or authorized in Astana.

Is this fully driverless Level 4?

Not in Kazakhstan based on the current announcement. Pony.ai says it has fully driverless commercial experience in some Chinese cities, but that operating status must not be transferred to a proposed Kazakhstan service. The Astana project is best classified as planned deployment / pre-testing, not current testing, supervised passenger rides, commercial service or fully driverless Level 4. Read what Level 4 means and how supervised operations differ.

What is confirmed about government approval?

Pony.ai says Kazakhstan has established a legal framework for driverless transport and that the partners intend to work with the government. It does not say an Astana route or commercial fleet has already been approved. Specific permits, fleet size, service areas and operational restrictions remain unconfirmed.

Why does this matter outside Kazakhstan?

The agreement could test how a globally used ride-hailing platform integrates a third-party autonomous driving stack in a new regulatory market. It is also relevant to comparisons with Bolt and Stellantis' planned Greater Paris pilot, UAE robotaxi projects and Waymo Toronto's testing-to-service pathway. However, international expansion is a possibility, not an approved deployment schedule.

Frequently asked questions

When will the Astana robotaxi service launch?

No launch date has been announced. The companies first need government agreement and feasibility validation.

Will the service be on the inDrive app?

That is the proposed distribution platform, but app-based autonomous ride bookings are not confirmed available.

Does Gen-7 mean the service is already Level 4?

No. A vehicle designed for Level 4 capability may still require testing and local authorization before driverless operation.
